Kermit also attended the University of Michigan with the help of the GI Bill, eventually earning his Master’s Degree in Education.
Kermit was a member of the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Hall of Fame, Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame, where the most prestigious award offered is the “Kermit Ambrose Award”, and the Catholic League Hall of Fame.
A friend and mentor to thousands upon thousands of students and athletes, Kermit N. Ambrose was a devoted teacher and coach who will be missed by all those who were lucky enough to know him.
He is survived by Brenda, Eric, and Shannon Gryskiewicz, Dave Ambrose, as well as tens of thousands of athletes and thousands of coaches whom he nurtured and helped.
Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.), Friday 4-8pm. Funeral Services will take place at the funeral home, Saturday 11am. Burial will take place in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

Kermit was born January 6, 1911, in Pierce, Nebraska.
In 1929, Kermit took his first teaching assignment in his hometown’s one-room school house. He made $2.50 a day. He also spent time teaching in metropolitan Chicago. At the onset of the Second World War, he joined the United States Army Air Corps, and served as a meteorologist specialist in Italy and Northern Africa.
After the war, he settled in Michigan and began teaching science at Seaholm High School in Birmingham. In addition to teaching, he also coached football, track, and cross country. Kermit coached Seaholm’s cross country team to two state championships and twice they finished runners-up.
